Transports and Community Mobility, Driving Rehabilitation and Community Participation Laboratory

Description

This research unit is investigating issues related to different forms of transportation mobility, including driving, to enable community participation for adults with disability and older adults. This includes approaches to screening, ecological evaluations, interventions and the impact of the use of different modes of transportation on the health and the engagement in community life for our clients. The researchers are working in close collaboration with different partners including clinicians and researcher at an international level to develop evidence-based approaches that are clinically relevant. We are currently analyzing the data from a seven-year national prospective cohort study that aim to develop a clinical decision tool to identify older adults who are safe and who are unsafe to drive. Concurrently, we developed an ecological driving approach, the Electronic Driving Observation Schedule (eDOs), which provides information on the everyday driving performance of older adults. As part of the Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration in Aging (CCNA), we are collaborating on the development of a multi-modal intervention for transitioning to driving cessation in clients with cognitive impairments. We recently joined an International expert advisory panel on Community Health and Transport (I-CHaT) to co-ordinate research on transport mobility. Knowledge translation initiatives include developing a training protocol to enable clinicians to implement the eDOS in their clinical practice. In addition, a community of practice was implemented to share knowledge and experience between various stakeholders to improve community participation for people with disability.
